Who We Are

The Stray Cat Alliance: Building a No Kill Nation One Stray at a Time.

Stray09
The Stray Cat Alliance is committed to the care and protection of the forgotten strays living in the shadows of our world. Our programs are a large piece of the puzzle in creating a “No Kill Nation,” where a home is found for every healthy or treatable companion animal, feral cats are fixed and properly cared for, and sterilization is readily available.

LEGISLATIVE ALERT

California State Senate poised to reinstitute cruel cat de-clawing in West Hollywood.

Legal victories are hard fought and difficult to win but when they happen they can make a difference in the lives of thousands of animals

Such a victory was the decision to ban domestic cat de-clawing in West Hollywood, opening the way for such legislation in other communities.

But the California Veterinary Medical Association is fighting back to protect their financial interests.

(They gave over $250,000 to State Legislators last year alone.)

AB 2427 (Eng) is facing its last vote before going to the Governor for signing. All attempts to stop it have failed.

AB 2427 will prevent local communities from deciding what veterinary procedures they will allow in their communities. This could affect future restrictions on declawing, tail docking, ear cropping and similar in humane procedures on farmed animals.

What you need to do!

1) Go to www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html.

2) Type in your zip code.

3) Press SEARCH.

4) Note the name of your Senator, the address of your Senator the Telephone number of your Senator and the Fax number of your Senator. If you have more than one Senator call or write all of them. They might not know if you are their constituent either.

5) Make a phone call.

a) When you get the receptionist, ask if you may speak with the staff person who is in charge of advising the Senator on AB 2427. You may be transferred to voice mail or get a real person.

b) explain as politely as you can your hope that the Senator will vote NO on AB 2427 (Eng) when it reaches the Senate Floor.

Reasons:

California’s cities are culturally, politically and ethnically diverse. Citizens should be allowed to elect local officials who will make policy that they support in their community as long as it does not interfere with the constitutional rights of others. No business interest should be allowed to dictate policy to all California local governments.

California’s courts have upheld the right of local governments to respond to the changing conditions and values in their own area. Our diversity as communities is what insures our lives, liberty and our pursuit of happiness.

As California grows, an attempt to restrict local government will result in even greater disenchantment of voters with government and their representatives. To tax and not to acknowledge the will of a people is to subvert the principle that made us a nation.

No business interest should restrict the right of citizens to establish their own local policies and preferences.

6) If you prefer, write a letter or send a fax to your Senator, but be prompt, the bill may be heard in the next week or two. You can use the same arguments presented above or others you wish to highlight. The compassionate concern for cats argument may not be the most effective but feel free to use it if you like.
